Florence had just headlined the
Laneway Festival in Auckland earlier that year, and it only took her half a year to come back to NZ for a headlining tour. Auckland band
The Naked & Famous opened the show at
Trusts Stadium, they were an up-and-coming indie pop band at the time with their single,
Young Blood, topping the NZ charts. Now the N&F are a hugely successful international act, but the Florence show was really their debut to the spotlight and it was my first time seeing them ever. They played a really good set, but it wasn't until they ended with
Young Blood that the audience really exploded. Florence brought
The Drums with her as the international opening act, These indie darlings were full of energy and really got the audience dancing. When
Florence Welch finally emerged from the darkness and onto the misty stage lit by a thousand fairy lights, the audience really went crazy. Her off-brand and unique style of pop is something the world has been missing ever since the likes of
Bjork. She was barefoot and wearing a floaty black dress over a sparkly outfit, she powerful voice was on display right from the beginning. The audience would sing along with every song and she acknowledged them by tilting the mic down towards us. Her personal drum gave her songs a haunting beat and her signature harp made the event a truly magical experience. She gave us a preview of a new song called
Strangeness and Charm that will be on her upcoming album. Finishing with the huge hit
Dog Days Are Over, it was the perfect end to a perfect set.
